Rafael Benitez was due to remain on San Siro until 2012, but the weak performances of the team under his command and the humiliating defeat at Werder put an end to his reign. The Italian club announced:
"Inter can announce that an agreement has been reached to the satisfaction of both parties. Inter thank the coach for the victories achieved together and for the professional relationship we shared."
Internazionale Milano are 13 points behind the Seria A leaders AC Milan and will face Bayern Munchen in Champions League round of 16 on 23 February.
